The British Virgin Islands (BVI)
This country (made up of islands) is close to the US Virgin Islands and separated by only three miles. Its other neighbor is Puerto Rico to the west of the islands. The capital Road Town is located in the largest of the islands, Tortola. The population of approximately 19,000 has an ethnic diversity of Afro-Caribbean, European, American and Asian.
The BVI is a British Dependant Territory with the Queen being the Head of State represented by a residing Governor who presides over a locally elected parliament consisting of the executive branch and the legislative council.
The Judicial System is under the direction of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, which includes the High Court of Justice and the Court of Appeal. The Final Court of Appeal resides with the Privy Council in England. The legal system is based on British Common Law and statute enacted by the locally elected legislative council when signed and approved by the Governor.
The economy of the BVI is dependent on tourism and Financial services. The many islands of the BVI provide a haven for Yachts and scuba enthusiasts.
